This session will explore what a psychologically safe Board looks like, how to foster the right culture and leadership approach, and the serious risks of low psychological safety, supported by real-world case studies.
The course will be led by Paul Dubal and is designed for governance professionals and leaders seeking to strengthen Board dynamics and decision-making through inclusive, safe environments.

Course Description: Psychological Safety in the Boardroom
In this session, Paul Dubal will talk about what a psychologically safe Board looks like, its attributes and its approach to decision making (and we will also identify what psychological safety is NOT). We recognize that the norm in Boards, even some high performing boards, do not enjoy psychological safety unless active steps are taken to create a conductive climate. Much of this revolves around creating the right culture and having the appropriate leadership style, where different voices are seen as a gift not an imposition, and where failure is seen as a learning opportunity.
We will examine the practical steps required to create this culture and examine the the importance of the attitude of senior leaders that both sit on the board and those who support it in facilitating a safe environment. We also assess the risks of low psychological safety and though case studies, understand the devastating consequences to an organization that fails to create a psychologically safe boardroom.
